Chasing Lear

“Chasing Lear” is a documentary film capturing the ground‐breaking production of Shakespeare’s King Lear.  The all‐Native cast on the main stage is a first in Canadian history.

The documentary brings viewers along on the creative journey from the first gathering, to wardrobe fittings right to the final dress rehearsal as well as numerous interviews with cast and crew. With a fly‐on‐the‐wall approach you’ll see candid laughs and chats about the daunting mountain that is King Lear.

About August Schellenberg (Augie)

August Schellenberg, also known as Augie, is a multi‐talented individual.  Before he took an interest in acting, he was a champion diver and boxer in his youth, with a reign as a Canadian lightweight Golden Gloves boxing champion.

More than 40 years ago, as a young theatre student who’d never been to a play in his life, Schellenberg saw King Lear at the Stratford Festival in Ontario.  The play had a profound impact on him, and his interest turned to acting.  In 1966, he became the first Native graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada.
